School leavers: have you considered a career in aged care?

Aged Care careers for school leavers - Yorke Institute

So, you’ve finished school. At the risk of sounding like a boring parent, have you thought about what’s next for you? Sit tight for a moment and let me tell you why a job in aged care is exactly what you’re looking for.

You’ve probably heard that roles in the aged care sector are ‘rewarding’ jobs. But what does that mean? Well, I’ll give you four great reasons why working with the elderly can help you find great satisfaction in your career.

  1. Making a difference

Your compassion, warmth, and patience positively impacts on the seniors in your care. You make a difference in their lives. And it’s wonderful to feel that internal motivation when you feel you are doing important work.

  1. Meeting new people

Every day, you’ll get to meet new people when you work in the aged care industry. You’ll learn a lot about life and their lived experience and will learn how to interact with people from all walks of life. And no doubt the seniors will have plenty of good stories to share over a cup of tea!

  1. Flexibility

There are many opportunities for flexibility and variation in your day when you work in aged care. It’s certainly not a desk job where you just push around paper for eight hours a day. Your days may be peppered with outings and excursions, festive celebrations, art, tai chi, reading, concerts, lunches, and more. Every day is different and that’s what makes it enjoyable!

  1. The Aged Care Boom

You’ll also have little problem finding employment once you complete your studies as the Aged Care industry continues to expand. Recent forecasts predict the number of Australians reaching the age of 65 is estimated to more than double in the next 40 years, from approximately 3.6 million in 2014-15 to 8.9 million in 2054-55. Effectively, this means that the aged care industry is experiencing a long-term boom and this is great news for those working in the industry because it can offer great opportunities and job security.

Job Placements at Yorke

One of the drawcards to training with Yorke Institute is our commitment to ensuring that you leave the college with plenty of industry experience under your belt. This helps you understand how aged care facilities operate, become familiar with interacting with elders and skilled staff, and also provide an opportunity to find roles in these facilities that interest you. Yorke Institute prides itself on arranging professional placements with high quality organisations, ensuring that our students learn from the best. Many of our graduates find employment with these same organisations.

In-Home Care

There are also plenty of careers in the aged care industry that are outside the traditional nursing home setup. In the past decade, there has been a big push for seniors to remain in their own home for as long as possible. Many care services (such as in-home care or low-level care facilities such as retirement communities) have sprung up to help support these seniors’ goals to live as independently as possible. Additionally, there are also other areas of specialisation you can pursue (such as palliative, respite, and dementia care) and this can help open the doors to greater opportunity in the industry.
